Wine Insight

Originally born in Western Australia, winemaker Gary Mills completed a Bachelor of Literature, before moving to Japan to study and work as an English teacher. Upon returning to Australia he had an epiphany during a brief stint as a Japanese speaking tour guide in Queensland, and began work in the vineyards of Margaret River. A five week vintage posting at Ridge Vineyards California turned into a 2 year full time position under the tutelage of winemaker Paul Draper and from there Gary has worked in Oregon and various regions within Australia. The Jamsheed label began in 2003 with a focus on single vineyard Syrahs and aromatic whites from unique sites in Victoria.

This is a blend of Upper Goulburn (60%) and Yarra Valley (40%) Syrah, fermented incorporating 80% whole bunches and indigenous yeasts, aged in new and older 500L puncheons and bottled unfined and unfiltered 8 months after picking. This is the most structured 'La Syrah' made to date, further stamping its credentials of impeccable value.

You’ll have to like the influence of whole bunches with this release. Green, herbal, briary, mezcal, it’s all there. Great texture, great aromas. Sniffs of black cherry, cola, wet earth, dusty spice cupboard, just a whiff of briar. In the palate, it’s a sweet then sour cavalcade of ripe fruit, madcap herbal things, pop of balsamic tang and finishes with a neat, dusty pucker.
