Wine Insight

Cambridge Road Vineyard is a small, 5.5 acre estate in the esteemed Martinborough Terrace Appellation.

Lance Redgewell and his family are the newest stewards of this vineyard, which was first planted in Pinot Noir and Syrah grapes in 1986; previously known as the Fraser Block. The vines are amongst the oldest in the country and Cambridge Road Vineyard continue their management with love and pride.

Lance says,"For us, small means beautiful. We focus our time and energy on perfecting and beautifying our land and cultivate it according to natural biodynamic principles. Our commitment is to making fine, handcrafted wines through meticulous viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques."

Light extraction built around carbonic fermentation leaves the palate quite ethereal. What tannins are present mostly take their form from the stem material so theres a botanic thread here. This wine is one of a pair made from an exceptional site in Hawkes Bay. The mature vines are planted at a high density of 6666 vines per hectare.

This wine style is driven by a love of whole bunch ferment and more traditional older styles of winemaking. By using such high levels of whole bunch we embrace tannin and are rewarded with an evolution of fruit, forest and spice aromas only possible when these techniques are employed.

Lifted plum nose, blackberry and cedarwood spice. Forest margin and a hint of spruce indicating the cool climate heritage.
