Wine Insight:
Young and talented winemaker, Matthieu Barret inherited Domaine du Coulet from his grandfather in 1998. His grandfather, who created the domaine after World War II, used for several years to sell the grapes to famous winemakers such as Chapoutier or Delas.
Ever since Matthieu took the helm of the estate and began Domaine du Coulet, he has worked in an organic and biodynamic way. The domaine maintains extremely high standards and since 2002 has been certified biodynamic by ECOCERT and also a member of BIODYVIN. Matthieu continues to evolve as a winemaker while only using natural methods to allow micro-soils to develop and to personalize the wines. They only use all natural yeasts that form on the grapes and use very little sulfur-only 2 g/hl at bottling. Matthieu’s wines are about purity of fruit, distinct minerality and pronounced terroir expression.
The selection of Syrah for this wine came from old and young vines located throughout the estate with the exception of the Coteaux peaks and foothills. The purity of the fruit is due in part to its 18 months of maturation, which combined the use of oval-shaped concrete fermenters and 500-litre barrels. This is a Cornas that delivers admirably following a decanting. The mouth is superb, lusty and gentle with notes of blackberry, violet, lavender, raw meat and blueberry. Definitely accessible, but with obvious cellaring potential, this is a wine to watch keenly.
