The conventional descriptions of the geography of the wine production areas in southern Piedmont (those around the city of Alba) divide this part of the region into two different sectors. The first, closer to the city and on the right bank (or east) of the Tanaro river, has fertile soils and produces wines of structure and concentration. The left side of the city, known as Roero, on the other hand, has sandy soils and the wines, fragrant and pleasant, normally demonstrate less power and intensity.
All true to a certain extent, but as in all generalizations, the details are often lost sight of. In fact, the line of the Hilberg-Pasquero estate proves very convincing (husband and wife, Michele Pasquero and Annette Hilberg, Italy and Germany, the Mediterranean and the Central European, not only a wedding, but a synthesis of two cultures). The winery is located in the town of Priocca, on a peak known as Bricco Gatti.
Here, in the north-eastern side of the Roero denomination , the soil is noticeably different, firm, less sandy, more structured, and even the wines, inevitably, are considerably different. A telltale sign that this is totally another Roero is the fact that the Hilberg-Pasquero company does not grow Arneis white grapes and does not produce any white wine at all, a pillar for the southernmost towns.
