Wine Insight

Christopher Andrew, New Zealander in 4th generation, came to the winery SALOMON UNDHOF in 2008 as an intern for harvest. Chris is not only a graduate of oenology at Lincoln University in Christchurch / New Zealand, but also a particularly sensitive and experienced winemaker.

Bert Salomon launched a joint venture with Chris being his New Zealand partner. The joint venture SALOMON&ANDREW reflects the common bond of winemaking on two continents.

Positioned in the southern central region of New Zealand’s South Island, Central Otago is bounded by towering mountains and interlaced with lakes and deep rivers. The soils are mostly glacially derived, with rich deposits of mica and schist.

The summers are hot and dry, and the winters crisp and snowy, Central Otago is New Zealand’s only "continental" region. Its soil and climate is ideally suited to Pinot Noir (80% of the plantings), producing expressive and elegant wines.

Bright, very pale straw colour, near colourless on rim. The nose is soft and light with ethereal aromatics of white florals, soft herbs and delicate gooseberry fruit, the bouquet attractively lifted and detailed. Dry to taste and light-medium bodied, this is slender in presentation with tightly bound flavours of white florals and stonefruits, gooseberries and sweet tropical fruits. The mouthfeel is crisp, brisk and racy, the palate with a slippery acid flow, flowing a very fine textural line. The wine carries to an elegant sweet and luscious, mouthwatering finish with gooseberry and mineral elements.
