Wine Insight
Travis Tausend’s vines grow at the very Southern tip of the Adelaide Hills in a small community called Hope Forest. The original carers and traditional owners of this land are the Perimangk people. The soils here are varied but the vines put their roots into mostly clay, sand and ironstone based soils. The vineyard is planted on several slopes but mostly make use of a North-East aspect with exception to the merlot which faces the North-West.
Being in a raised valley that is cooled by two winds, the hot days experienced by the regions surrounding are mitigated by the Southern ocean wind and the gulf breeze, making the micro climate one of the coolest in the Adelaide Hills. Because of this beautiful flow of air, there are pockets of noble rot in the vineyard that Travis uses to add another layer to his riesling and sauvignon blanc.
Semillon from Magpie Springs vineyard, Hope Forest. The Handful wine has been made
from the same 15 rows of South West facing Semillon vineyard in Hope Forest for the last seven years. The fruit from these rows is full of flavours and racy acidity. In the cellar for 2021, Travis destemmed the Semillon and allowed some time for fermentation on skins.
The wine was tasted each morning and evening until its tannins and acid began to
intertwine in an interesting way. At this stage, the fruit was pressed on a long slow press
cycle to extract the flavours and textures from those skins. The wine is bright with racy acidity and structured tannins. 2021 Handful is different to previous vintages yet filled with vitality and personalities in its own right.
